What is a voice fitting for Church service?

after a mass service, the parish priest of the church im doing volunteer work in the music ministry approached me and told me that based on some feedbacks from parishioners, and also on his own aural judgement, the way that my choir and I sing is not fitting to the church.
i asked him what is fitting then?
aside from years of singing with and training choirs, i also have formal trainings in church music from various institutions and never was it discussed what is a fitting voice for church.
is it our repertoire? he told me that except for the Lord's Prayer: "Ama Namin" by Manoling Francisco, our entire repertoire cant be followed by the congregation. how can this be, when the songs were singing have been constant since 2012. e.g. Daniel Schutte's parts of the mass which was given by the Music Ministry for all choirs to sing. some of our songs for Entrance, Alleluia, and Offertory even came from joint-choirs services, meaning to say, other choirs also sing those songs. and to cover the rest of our repertoire, we submitted a list last year to the Music Minsitry which no one objected to. on certain feast days, we sing some songs that are not part of the repertoire we submitted. e.g. it was our first mass service that night after Easter Sunday, so we sang "The Light of A Million Mornings." he pointed out this song is not fitting, and I told him that the song came from a Christmas Cantata and it talks about the light of Christ, so how can it not be fitting? And if it was Lent, we certainly wouldn't be singing that song. he told me that he is not questioning the message of the song, but how it was sung. Why, is there a proper way of singing "The Light of A Million Mornings" in the church?
so that brings us back to the issue, the way we sing is not fitting to the church.
he told me that my voice is too theatrical, and if i can make some adjustments, then it may be more fitting.
what is too theatrical? as a professional theater actor, I take offense in that. in theater, we mirror life, we dig out the emotions, make it as realistic as possible, and make our listeners reflect about their own lives. So, if by being theatrical, I have to downgrade my standards to be more fitting, then I will certainly not do that.
he also pointed put that when were singing, we draw the attention of the congregation. i told him that if that is the effect on people, i cant do anything about that, we are just singing, we do not intentionally try to get the attention of people. he told me that our sound is more of a performing choir, rather than a church choir. i told him that if we are to perform on stage, then our sound will intentionally be more of what were doing in the church.
there's only like 5-6 members of my choir (chamber ensemble, more like it) and we take our musical inspiration from the Barbershop genre. We sing acapella with gorgeous harmonies, so I cannot understand what is wrong with that.
i told the priest that since our way of singing isn't fitting, perhaps, we should stop singing! he told me not to go to that extent and not to give up and urged me to make some adjustments.
what is there to adjust?
i have been singing in that church since the late 80's and now, all those years, my voice isn't fitting?
singers have different voices and choirs have different sound too. as musicians, we respect that differences. so what is this now, is there a standard or a fitting sound for church?
